Tackling one of the biggest transportation messes in Central Texas, Reconnect Austin has recently been gaining momentum in its endeavor to add both body and soul to the I-35 corridor in the heart of our region – Downtown Austin. How so? Suggestions: take TxDOT’s idea of depressed lanes a step further; construct a “cap” over those depressed lanes with a boulevard and median (in lieu of frontage roads); restore our urban grid, in the process reconnecting East and West Austin with Great Streets; and create a walkable/bike-able open space that becomes an integral part of the fabric of Austin.
