Black + Vernooy took on the opportunity to design and facilitate construction on a pre-summer addition to an existing home in the Allandale neighborhood. Friends of the firm had long been hoping for a screen porch extension off of their living and dining area to catch some shade and avoid the mosquitoes. Responding to the complicated existing conditions, B+V designed the porch to be inserted adjacent to an existing outbuilding and to rise above the low, existing eave of the roof. The new volume is complemented by two pairs of very large sliding barn doors and a generous 7’ skylight that runs along both sides of the ridgeline. Additionally a new roof cricket sheds water into two rain collection barrels for irrigation.
The clients are now searching for that perfect hybrid ping-pong / dining table to entertain their son Emmitt and dinner guests alike.
Thanks to Austin Timber Works for building the doors and to GT Remodeling for constructing the project!
