Originally designed by architect Hank Schubart (b. 1917 – d. 1998,) a former student of Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin, this Salt Spring Island home is beautifully sited between views of the ocean and a meadow. Build in 1986; the house was in need of a series of updates to be completed in phases. Since the client, and Austin TX resident, likes to take advantage of the temperate Canadian summers, Phase I focused on outdoor living.
Black + Vernooy collaborated with garden designer Lorraine Hamilton of Rhubarb Designs to create a series of terraced cedar decks punctuated by large steel planters. Exquisitely built by Speed Construction, the deck has become a center for Salt Spring summer entertaining.
